17 Deaf People Hospitalized After Celebration in Aachen

by info@deaf24.com

Aachen – A major emergency response was launched in Aachen after several guests became seriously ill during a celebration at the Center for the Deaf. Many people suddenly suffered from severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Seventeen people were taken to hospital. Authorities believe the cause was spoiled potato salad.

A Pleasant Afternoon Ended Suddenly

Many people gathered for a celebration at the Center for the Deaf on Talbotstraße in Aachen. It was a pleasant afternoon, but the atmosphere changed dramatically when several guests suddenly became ill. They complained of severe stomach pain and nausea.

In the end, 17 people were transported to hospitals in the surrounding area. At first, no one knew why so many people had become sick. Police in Aachen have now identified the likely cause: the potato salad had probably spoiled because of the high temperatures that day. All 17 patients had eaten the potato salad before becoming ill.

Emergency Declared After a Person Lost Consciousness

Emergency medical services were initially called because one person had lost consciousness. When the first responders arrived, they discovered several more people who were also ill. Five additional guests were found lying on the ground.

All of them showed similar symptoms, including nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. It quickly became clear that this was a larger incident. Emergency services therefore declared a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). This emergency protocol is activated when many people require medical assistance at the same time.

Sign Language Interpreters Assisted Deaf Guests

As more guests reported feeling unwell, the emergency response was expanded. Eventually, ten ambulances and several emergency physicians were deployed. The Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe emergency services also assisted during the operation.

Many of the guests were deaf, making effective communication especially important. Fortunately, sign language interpreters were already present at the event. They interpreted in German Sign Language, enabling emergency personnel to communicate more effectively with the affected guests and better understand their symptoms.

Meanwhile, the fire department inspected the building to ensure there was no gas leak. Air quality measurements ruled out carbon monoxide and other hazardous gases. This confirmed that the illnesses were not caused by the building’s air quality but by the spoiled potato salad.

Why Does Food Spoil So Quickly in Hot Weather?

High temperatures allow bacteria to multiply rapidly in food. Dishes containing mayonnaise, cream, or eggs are particularly vulnerable. Potato salad often contains these ingredients. If such food is left unrefrigerated or exposed to heat for too long, harmful bacteria can grow quickly.

Food contaminated with these bacteria can cause food poisoning. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Food Safety Tips for Summer Barbecues and Outdoor Events

Anyone planning a summer gathering should follow some important food safety precautions:

  • Keep food cold. Dishes containing mayonnaise, cream, or eggs should be stored in a refrigerator or insulated cooler. Never leave them in direct sunlight.
  • Watch the time. As a general rule, mayonnaise-based salads should not remain at room temperature for more than two hours. In very hot weather, they should be discarded even sooner.
  • Maintain good hygiene. Wash hands, cutting boards, and kitchen utensils thoroughly before preparing food. This helps reduce the risk of bacterial contamination.
  • Cover food. Flies and other insects can spread harmful bacteria, so food should always be kept covered during outdoor events.

Is It Safe for Guests to Bring Homemade Salads?

Not always.

When guests bring homemade food, it is often impossible to know exactly how it was prepared. Was the kitchen clean? Was the food kept properly refrigerated? How long had the salad been sitting before it arrived at the event?

Because these questions cannot always be answered, homemade dishes generally carry a higher food safety risk than meals prepared by professional catering services.

Is a Catering Service the Safer Option?

In many cases, yes.

Professional catering companies are required to follow strict food hygiene regulations. They also have appropriate refrigeration equipment for transporting and storing food safely. These measures significantly reduce the risk of food spoilage.

If you decide to prepare food yourself or ask guests to bring dishes, it is especially important to keep food well chilled and avoid leaving it at room temperature for extended periods. Following these simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk of food poisoning.

A Reminder for Everyone

The incident in Aachen shows how a joyful celebration can quickly turn into a medical emergency when food is not stored properly. Fortunately, foodborne illnesses are often preventable. By following basic food safety practices, organizers and guests can help ensure that summer celebrations remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
