A brazen scam is shaking confidence in charitable giving: A man pretended to be deaf and duped dozens of gullible people. The 28-year-old Romanian took advantage of passers-by’s good nature to collect money for supposedly charitable causes. Using forged documents and a clever appearance, he lured many donors into his trap. The police finally put a stop to his scam and the man was brought to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between May and October last year, the man travelled to Vorarlberg several times. Outside shopping centres and in busy streets, he pretended to be deaf and claimed to be collecting donations for a regional association for disabled and deaf-mute children. He showed passers-by a fake list and asked for financial support. The amounts ranged from 10 to 50 euros. At least 29 people fell for his scam before the police intervened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday, the court sentenced the defendant to nine months in prison, six of which were suspended. As the man had already spent 72 days in pre-trial detention, he could be released as early as 13 December. However, the sentence is not yet final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The offender is the father of four children and has a total of twelve siblings. He told the court that financial hardship drove him to commit the crime. He claimed to be unemployed and only able to find occasional work. Despite these circumstances, he has seven previous convictions, four of them for similar offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This case highlights the importance of checking charity appeals carefully. Unfortunately, people continue to be exploited by false claims. The deaf community is particularly affected by such incidents: scams like this create mistrust of genuine deaf people and their legitimate causes. This makes it more difficult for genuine charities to gain support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fraudsters who impersonate deaf people not only harm the people they deceive, but also the deaf community as a whole. It is crucial to expose such acts and restore confidence in genuine charities.
